The Toronto, Ontario, figure skating community is mourning the loss of Mark Hird, a respected coach, mentor, performer, and friend whose passion for skating and unwavering support for others left a lasting impact on generations of athletes and colleagues.
Mark was admired not only for his knowledge of the sport but also for the warmth, humour, and infectious enthusiasm he brought to every rink. Those who worked alongside him remember his booming laugh, quick wit, and remarkable ability to lift spirits, even during the most demanding training sessions. His genuine kindness and positive outlook made him a beloved figure both on and off the ice.
Friends have reflected on years of shared memories, recalling unforgettable road trips, summers spent coaching together, and countless moments filled with laughter. Whether introducing friends to his favourite music, sharing stories, or encouraging those around him, Mark had a gift for making ordinary moments extraordinary.
As a coach, Mark inspired countless young skaters through his patience, encouragement, and belief in their potential. Parents and former students remember him as someone who made every athlete feel valued, helping them build confidence while fostering a genuine love for the sport. His lessons extended beyond skating, teaching resilience, sportsmanship, and self-belief.
Before dedicating himself to coaching, Mark enjoyed a distinguished career as a professional performer. He skated with Walt Disney’s World on Ice from 1986 to 1989 before serving as both performer and performance director with Willy Bietak Productions and Stageworks Worldwide Productions. Outside the skating world, he also held leadership roles with Sporting Life and RW & Co., where he formed lasting friendships and earned the respect of colleagues.
Since news of his passing, heartfelt tributes have poured in from former students, fellow coaches, performers, friends, and members of the skating community, all remembering a man whose generosity, humour, and dedication enriched countless lives.
