NORTH ROYALTON, Ohio — A North Royalton city official was fatally shot Friday afternoon inside a municipal office, prompting a major law enforcement response and an active homicide investigation.

The victim has been identified as David A. Smerek, the City of North Royalton’s Building Commissioner, who was shot inside his office at the city’s Building Department located at 11545 Royalton Road, near State Road.

According to initial emergency dispatch information, police and emergency medical crews were called to the city service and building department after receiving reports of a shooting involving the building commissioner.

Responding emergency personnel were instructed to stage outside the scene while police officers entered the building to secure the area. Radio traffic later indicated that the victim had died at the scene from his injuries.
